Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Turtle Lake, is a picturesque freshwater lake located in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam. It's a central landmark and a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The lake offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city streets and is surrounded by historical sites, parks, and charming cafes. A visit to Hoan Kiem Lake is an essential part of experiencing the essence of Hanoi. The lake's name, "Hoan Kiem," translates to "Lake of the Returned Sword," and is steeped in legend. According to the story, in the 15th century, Emperor Le Loi received a magical sword from a golden turtle in the lake, which helped him defeat the Ming Dynasty. After the victory, the Emperor returned the sword to the turtle in the lake, hence the name. In the center of the lake stands the iconic Turtle Tower (Thap Rua), a small pagoda built on a tiny island, commemorating this legend. Visitors can stroll along the lake's perimeter, enjoy the scenic views, and visit the Ngoc Son Temple, located on a small island in the lake and connected by the iconic red Huc Bridge. Hoan Kiem Lake is centrally located and easily accessible by bus. Several bus routes stop near the lake, including bus numbers 02, 04, 08A, 08B, 09A, 09ACT, 31, 36, and 86. You can also reach the lake by taxi, motorbike taxi (xe om), or cyclo.
